Key item features

The Philokalia is a collection of texts written between the fourth and the fifteenth centuries by spiritual masters of the Orthodox Christian tradition. First published in Greek in 1782, then translated into Slavonic and later into Russian, The Philokalia has exercised an influence in the recent history of the Orthodox Church far greater than that of any book apart from the Bible. It is concerned with themes of universal importance: how man may develop his inner powers and awake from illusion; how he may overcome fragmentation and achieve spiritual wholeness; how he may attain the life of contemplative stillness and union with God.

"This excellent English translation, which takes into account the latest scholarly research into the original works, represents a major 'gift' from the wise men of the East. The fluency of the literary style of this translation and the practical understanding which these writings reveal for the spiritual predicaments facing each Christian in every generation brings the book well within the range of the ordinary reader who seeks spiritual counsel. The complete Philokalia covers the period from the fourth to the fifteenth century. Volume One . . . takes us up to the eighth century and is thus the common heritage of Orthodox and Catholics." - Chrysostom

Wisdom In The Desert

I actually purchased Vol. 1 of the Philokalia for my son's birthday in order for him to experience the writings of early Desert Fathers on his own. I have been reading from my copy and thought it would be of great interest to him in his exploration of Christian theological studies. I only learned about the Philokalia after recently discovering the Eastern Orthodox Church and while also listening to a Catholic podcast under the same name. I absolutely love the rich and deeply spiritual content shared by these early fathers of the faith. I believe any Christian who has a desire for the traditional roots of their faith would do well to seek the historical writings contained within these volumes as well as writings by the Apostolic Fathers. Having grown tired of prosperity preaching, celebrity preachers, and the lunacy of many charismatics, I wanted to get to the roots and discover what is real from the beginning followers. For this reason, I gifted this wonderful book to my son, in hopes that he will also be drawn deeper into the depths of true worship and relationship with the Triune God. Also, Walmart is far superior at packing their books than Amazon. I never have damaged corners on my books purchased here unlike Amazon who seems to drop their books on purpose before shipping.
