It was not difficult to convince the members of the Illinois legislature that the state Should be one of the factors in the centennial anniversary; and so in October, 1907, the House and Senate adopted a joint resolution authorizing the Governor to appoint a Commission of fifteen representative citizens to have charge of all arrange ments for a fitting and proper celebra tion of the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of the greatest of all American statesmen.
