Ixora Maui Red is a dwarf, evergreen shrub that loves it hot and humid. Plants will tolerate full sun but do much better with some shade in the afternoon. Maybe that's why one of the common names it goes by is Flame of the Woods. Where hardy outdoors, Red Maui Ixoras heavy branching and compact habit make it an ideal choice for hedges, borders, and foundation plantings in partially shaded locations, and is also lovely in a pot as a houseplant. Bright reddish orange ball-shaped flower clusters decorate the glossy, bronze to dark green foliage of this tropical shrub, originally from Hawaii. Blooms heavily during warm months, then off-and -on through cooler weather. A dwarf, evergreen shrub with small leaves resembling boxwood and a shrubby sprawling look that thrives in high heat and high humidity. Maui Ixora is a multi-stemmed semi-tropical evergreen shrub with a more or less rounded form. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition.This shrub will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and is best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed. It is a good choice for attracting bees and butterflies to your yard. Maui Ixora features showy red ball-shaped flowers at the ends of the branches from late winter to late fall. It has attractive green foliage which emerges light green in spring. The glossy oval leaves are highly ornamental and remain green throughout the winter. The fruit is not ornamentally significant.
