Even bad movies can have good soundtracks. Such is the case with Rob Zombie's latest masterpiece/abomination The Devil's Rejects. For those afraid to ask, The Devil's Rejects is the sequel to the equally grotesque/brilliant House of 1000 Corpses. Like it's predecessor, The Devil's Rejects is a joke that goes on too long/an homage to '70s horror flicks. But the soundtrack is one of the best collections of '70s classic rock ever put together. Everyone will agree on that.

The album opens with the mournful, haunting, "Midnight Rider" by The Allman Brothers. This is a song that always sticks with you through the morning if you play it on the way to work. Three Dog Night's "Shambala" doesn't seem to get into many classic rock station programs and that's too bad. There's a very cool strolling groove here -- a great song that bears hitting repeat. The remastering does good things for the vocals, too.

Riffmeister Joe Walsh was only 21 when he joined the James Gang. At 22, he had his first hit with "Funk No. 49" and the rest, as they say, is history. This is where the remastering really shines. Those stinging riffs and solos have never sounded better.

Further testament to Walsh's enduring superstardom is the addition of "Rocky Mountain Way." It makes perfect sense in the context of the collection and it just sounds great. The bass is tightened up on this edition and the guitar screams with joy.

The addition of Buck Owens' "Satan's Got to Get Along Without Me" is a funny, tongue in cheek joke here. And at 2:02, just the right length. Any more and the joke would get old. This song is a nice, whimsical touch.

Love/hate it, the soundtrack is chock full of great -- really great -- '70s album rock. The album is not only a tasty collection of music, but the arrangement of the songs is at times clever, always winsome. That might be more disturbing than such a horrible/fantastic movie. On that, everyone can agree, perhaps even to the level of asking Mr. Zombie to put together another compilation or two

I've been waiting forever for this CD... Why it took so long after the movie was out, is still a mystery to me... I wanted it mainly for the Terry Reid songs, but it's ALL good...
