Excerpt from Carding Engines and Carding: Two Papers This is a practical difficulty which I think few men occupying a responsible position in Cotton Mills, in these difficult times, would care to face. It has been said by the Makers of these Cards that they profess and determine to keep them in order themselves, but I think I will have the sense of most practical men with me when I say that no man who respects himself would be content to leave the setting of his Cards to the absolute will and discretion of an outsider. It is evident then that these Cards for the ordinary purposes of Cotton Mills would be unsuitable for the reason that their practicability is absolutely dependent upon the character of the clothing employed. Inasmuch as an ordinary class of wire demanding frequent grinding and consequent frequent setting would make it impossible to work these Cards in any number. This question of Clothing is one of great importance, but I do not propose to go into that in detail on this occasion, inasmuch as it opens up questions of experience so varied that it would require at least two evenings to do justice to it. I will however proceed to describe the Carding Engine recently perfected and completed by Messrs. Dobson barlow. I will premise that this Carding Engine contains all the elements necessary for the production of really good work, inasmuch as special patterns have been constructed with a view of so strengthening the whole of the framing and the various parts that there may be an entire absence of deflection or vibration.
