Silent Sons : A Book for and About Men (Paperback)

Publishers Weekly,Two studies of more than 500 men from dysfunctional families conducted by Ackerman ( Perfect Daughters ) provide the data for this book, which looks closely at problems faced by these ``silent sons.'' Contrary to the stereotype of the ``strong, silent man,'' silent sons comprise many types, including workaholics, men with ``short fuses'' and others who hide their feelings from themselves and their loved ones. Among the findings provided in the book's tables: 66% of silent sons had fathers who were poor role models; 69% have problems in relating to women; and yet, 65% believe that ideally a man should be caring and loving. The book explores the various ways dysfunctional families affect relationships among fathers and sons and mothers and sons, romantic relationships, parenting and work. There is also a chapter on how women perceive these men, based on a survey of 100 women. Finally, Ackerman offers men advice on how to communicate better and grow emotionally.
