GE vs. Honeywell

Before purchasing this timer, I tried installing the Honeywell RPLS530A 3-way timer purchased from Amazon. I could not get the Honeywell to power on, despite following the wiring instructions carefully and consulting with an electrician friend regarding the circuitry and instructions. I have not returned the item to Amazon; it's too much time and trouble. Naturally, I was delighted when I got the GE to power on successfully. I now have it set to come on at dark and go off at 1:00 a.m. 7 days a week. The nice thing about doing the Wal-Mart pick-up order is that if the purchase did not work out, I could have returned the item to the store. Also, the item was ready for pick-up in less than 3 days. I still don't understand why the Honeywell did not work, but it may have something to do with the Honeywell not utilizing any connections to the neutral wires. The GE connects to the bundle of neutral wires in my 2-gang wall box.

GE 3 way astro in wall digital timer

If you want a timer for indoor or outdoor lights, this is excellent. It is set for 1 of 3 north/south zones in the country, and then changes the time for the lights to come on at dusk/off in the morning. You can also set each day individually for turning on/off. This is my 2nd unit. Instructions for wiring and setting the unit are good, but you must follow each step to program. My first unit was affected by a probable electrical surge (bad weather).

Great timer.....

I bought two of these timers to replace normal on off switches controlling my outside lights. I found the installation easy. You must have a neutral (white) wire in order for this switch to work. Most homes built in the last 20 years have this wire. The only difficult part was getting everything to fit back into the box. But after a little effort I got them installed. I found on-line videos helpful in explaining the programming. After almost a month both switches are working as advertised. Adjusting for the change in sunrise and sunset times automatically. These little timers cost only about half of what other brands charge and in many cases they have more features than the others. If I could install these and program them, anyone should be able to do it. Great timers.....
