I bought the small, and it's perfect for my 18# pug/ shih tzu mix. She took to it pretty quickly, and seems to enjoy having her own "lawn chair" on the deck lol. Comes with a convenient carry bag, so it'll be going camping with us too. Very happy with my purchase!

Would not provide much shade

Unless the sun was directly above this product it would not provide much sun at other times during the day. The top would need to be adjustable to be very helpful.
