I may as well tell you right now, because you'll discover it for yourself as you read ahead, that I think life is a great place. It offers all sorts of opportunities, adventures and new experiences to discover. Yes, difficult times are sure to pop up from time to time, but I also believe that they serve a purpose both personally and professionally. Personally, being backed against a wall, is sometimes the only experiences that forces us to choose a direction in contrast to going with the flow or being knocked down. When you are backed into a corner, life requires you to make a decision and take action to clear a new path and direction. Professionally, the same is true. Tough situations require that we make a decision or die (professionally). It can make it easier to gain buy in from the team, along the lines of the proverbial "burning platform," and can make the path and need for change, sometimes unpleasant, but clear. Clear can be refreshing. I often wonder why more people and organizations don't take advantage of all that life has to offer. They seem to be buying time, keeping their head down, just trying to get by. I affectionately refer to these people as "potatoes," and hope to find opportunity to help them off of their coach in the future. I'm not saying, by the way, that I am perfect and have explored every possible path to determine to reach my optimal level of performance and potential, but I've made a continuous effort and celebrate the results and experiences that come from this every day. How does one best use this book? By reading and doing. Try on thing new in your life from each chapter and be open to where it takes.
