To test gold karat content and purity, scratch the item onto the test stone leaving a visible deposit, then place a small drop of the solution over top of deposit; if the gold is the same karat or higher the solution will not affect the deposit; if the deposit is of a lower karat, the deposit will dissolve and eventually disappear.
