There is an unexplored world of music for the string quartet that is perfectly suited as encore pieces. Whether they are movements from complete string quartets or independent pieces, there is much beautiful music worth exploring in this genre.Franz Joseph Haydn has been called the father of the string quartet, so it's fitting that the program opens with the charming Andante from his Quartet in F, Op. 3 no. 5. A more energetic side of the composer is also presented with the bouncy Rondo from his Quartet in C, Op. 33 no. 3. One composer not usually associated with chamber music is Giacomo Puccini. His 'Crisantemi' is an elegiac study in honor of the Duke of Savoy. The piece is eminently moving and beautifully performed by the Delmￃﾩ Quartet. Eastern European music is well represented with memorable quartet movements by Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Dvorak and Suk. Because of its breadth of repertoire, this is a perfect recording for chamber music neophytes and veterans alike.
