But Gordon's artistic development occurred at such a whirlwind pace that this recording sounds worlds away from its aforementioned predecessors. The cast of characters had totally changed (Wynton Kelly makes one of the last recorded appearances of his life here), but moreover, Gordon is in more of a playfully, reflective mood. JUMPIN' BLUES is a little more relaxed, a little less breathlessly innovative than the earlier recordings of Gordon's Prestige phase. Gordon's masterful tenor is no less thrilling, though. Whether he's spinning out enchanting filligrees on the ballad "For Sentimental Reasons" or getting gritty and soulful on the title cut, Gordon's melodic journeys are never less than captivating. $25.18

Full title: The Lake Charles Atomic Bomb: Original Goldband Recordings.
Recorded between the mid-50's & early 60's. Includes liner notes by Jeff Hannusch.
These are the original recordings of Boozoo Chavis, made for the Goldband label in Louisiana from the mid-'50s to the early '60s. The opening number is his "Paper in My Shoe," which became a hit in 1954, and by some measures marks the beginnings of a resurgence in zydeco. The song is relentless, proud, world weary, and danceable. It's also become a standard in the state of Louisiana. Disillusioned with the music business, Chavis left it for the better part of 30 years, reemerging triumphantly in the mid-'80s. These songs continued to spread the word of zydeco, even in his absence. With a song called "Hamburgers and Popcorn" how can you go wrong? $27.79
