Excerpt from History of the Eighty-Third Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry: For Three Years With Sherman
It has been urged by a few that deserters should be exposed to the public, but the majority are of a different Opinion. Indeed, there are but very few of those who deserted from our Regiment that did not repentantly return, and were restored to duty and favor.
I would tender my hearty thanks to those officers and men who have afforded me so much encourage ment and even assistance in this, my first and only work of the kind.
If the friends of the 83d Indiana shall, in this little work, find a satisfactory record of our cam paining and of our suffering, as a Regiment, in the cause of our Country, I shall be amply rewarded in my efforts for their information.
