During the earlier of those busy years the dominant influence was that of Lord Lyndhurst. In Vivian Grey (1826) Disraeli foreshadowed the future with prophetic accuracy. At this moment, exclaims the hero, how many a powerful noble wants only wit to be a Minister; and what wants Vivian Grey to attain the same end i That noble's influence. When two persons can so materially assist each other, why are they not brought together Shall I, because my birth baulks my fancy, shall I pass my life a moping misanthrope in an old chateau 2 Assuredly there was little of the moping misanthrope about Disraeli. Into the years between 1831, when he returned from a prolonged tour in the East, and 1837, when he entered Parliament as Member for Maidstone, he crowded much varied life. He had the qualities necessary to ensure success in politics - youth, an acute intellect, a mind broadened by travel and read ing, a brilliant pen, and, like Vivian Grey, he could perform right skilfully upon the most splendid of musical instruments, the human voice. He had a genius for political missionary work, and an extraordinary acquaint ance with men and things. He combined with these advantages a force and dash that were ruthless where a political end was to be gained. A man of such varied parts, endowed by Nature with a striking personality accentuated by an extreme coxcombry of dress, was bound to be buzzed about in society, and his growing fame in politics was aided by his growing fame in litera ture.
