Curling is a sport in which two teams of four players take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called rocks, across the ice curling surface (sheet) toward a target area called the house. After a curler throws a stone, his or her teammates will often start sweeping the ice in front of the stone using brooms, warming the ice and reducing friction. This allows the stone to travel farther and straighter. First played in medieval Scotland, curling has grown in popularity worldwide. This sport made its first Olympic appearance in 1924, becoming a “demonstration sport” in the following years. In 1998, it was officially established as a competitive Olympic sport.
