The number of bars reflect the flight status of air crew or level of a pilot in a structured training environment:
- Four Bar - Captain or Chief Instructor/Check Airman
- Three Bar - First Officer or Flight Instructor Certificate
- Two Bar - Flight Engineer or Commercial Pilot Certificate
- Single Bar - Flight Purser or Private Pilot Certificate
- or No Bar - Primary Students
- Five Bar - Though sometimes sold as a novelty, it is used by some operations to reflect the status of Chief Pilot.
