The 317th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, previously assigned to Aerospace Defense Command at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska, is no longer an active unit as of its inactivation on December 31, 1969.
During World War II, the squadron was first established as the 317th Fighter Squadron and underwent training in the United States before being deployed to North Africa for combat operations in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. It temporarily ceased combat activities from September to December 1943 for aircraft equipment changes and relocation from Africa to Italy. The squadron was awarded two Distinguished Unit Citations before being deactivated in the United States.
Following reactivation, the squadron served as an air defense unit from 1947 to 1969 before being inactivated.
