This book is based upon a typical American West Coast (e.g. California) English accent. Not all Americans speak the same way, and obviously people from other English speaking countries have their own pronunciations. These 40 sounds, far from being the "official" English sounds, reflect how a large percentage of Americans speak everyday.

Substantial time has been spent cross-checking a wide variety of US-based dictionaries to strengthen the choices made. By learning these 40 sounds, a child or non-native English speaker should be able to greatly improve his/her spoken American English, identify which sounds need further practice, and begin to find patterns (and many contradictions) in English spellings.
