It has an LED strip inside which lights up when you open the cabinet, and that takes three AAA batteries. Of course the light shuts off by microswitch when you close the door. It had an interesting smell when we took it out of the box. That could be the pressed particleboard and part of the manufacturing. Looking forward to that faint smell to dissipate hopefully over the next 48 hours. Other than that my daughters mounted on the wall and it looks fantastic
