These studies in the sociology of politics are not intended pri marily as a collection of essays which happen to be written by the same person. Rather, I tried to select from my various articles those which best illustrate the contribution the sociologist can make to an understanding of democratic political systems. In so doing, it became clear that a book prepared solely from already existing articles would create difficulties for the reader because it would omit many problems and issues which should logically be discussed. I have attempted to remedy this deficiency by writing a number of essays especially for this volume and by extensively rewriting others. By these revisions, I have tried to create an inte grated book.
