Mars 3D Topography Model – Valles Marineris, One of the Largest Canyons in the Solar System (Scale 1:12.5M, 1 cm = 125 km)

Explore Mars like never before with this intricately detailed 3D topographical model of Valles Marineris, derived from high-resolution data collected by the MOLA altimeter onboard NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor mission. Named after NASA’s Mariner 9 orbiter, which discovered it in 1971, Valles Marineris is one of the largest canyon systems in the Solar System, stretching over 4,000 km (2,500 mi) in length, 200 km (120 mi) in width, and plunging as deep as 7 km (23,000 ft). Running along Mars’ equator, it spans nearly a quarter of the planet’s circumference and consists of interconnected chasms, including Noctis Labyrinthus, Tithonium and Ius Chasmata, Melas, Candor, Ophir, Coprates Chasma, and Ganges, Capri, and Eos Chasmata, which lead into chaotic terrain emptying into Chryse Planitia. Geological studies suggest Valles Marineris formed as a massive tectonic rift when Mars’ crust thickened in the Tharsis region, later shaped by erosion from wind, lava flows, and possibly ancient water activity, with some researchers believing lava from Pavonis Mons contributed to its structure.
