Donald Harrison was, along with Terence Blanchard, an integral part of one of the classic editions of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. This is the first of Donald Harrison's outings in his association with the Candid label and finds him paying tribute to the great innovative band leader. 'For Art's Sake' is an album of '90 's Bebop at it's best -a music born of the hard drive, hard Bop of the '50 's and colored by the later experiments of men like Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. Watch out for the structured spontaneity of the leader's playing throughout, for the brassy, arrogant fire of the prodigious Marlon Jordan and the sparkling rhythm section propelled by Carl Allen. Worth noting too that the young new bassist Christian McBride is a mere 18 years old here, whilst Marlon Jordan is a quot;veteranquot; at 19!
