Smart design and solid build quality

Lenovo's Legion line is in the gaming category but you can't tell by looking at them, which I appreciate because mine isn't for gaming. Legions aren't Linux certified either but this one works well with Linux on a second NVMe SSD. Expansion options with the 15" model allows for a hard disk or SSD in a 2.5" bay, or an extra M.2 SSD, but not both at the same time. However, by removing the 2.5" caddy to make room for a M.2 SSD, space opens up for Lenovo's larger battery. Maximum memory is stated as 16 Gb but this is wrong; 32 Gb is supported. It's nice having a laptopd lid that doesn't require two hands to open. The footprint is smaller than my previous 15" laptop but it's no less thinner, although there's such a thing as too thin. Air flow is more than adequate with two cooling fans and plenty of vents. Fans are reasonably quiet when they spin up at high temps. The display looks good and its anti-glare surface is the best I've ever used. Integrated and discrete graphics in hybrid mode are troublesome when booting multiple operating systems, so I just setup Nvidia as the prime adapter in Windows with Nvidia drivers and use open source Nouveau drivers in Linux. The keyboard looks and feels great, plus its backlighting shines through the characters instead of just around the keys. Fn combined with F11 enables over-clocking for games but I don't use this feature. Every port I'll ever need is present including Ethernet. Average battery life is roughly six hours between 100 and 20 percent. And a big shout-out to Lenovo for continuing to make the best quality power supply connetors in the business. Before this one I bought a Legion Ryzen variant from a local Walmart store but it didn't work out after a couple weeks of frustration. The AMD USB host controller had problems, the touchpad didn't work with Linux (kernel 5.9 has since fixed it), and it bothered me that Radeon colors seemed flat. Concerns about other AMD related hurdles (having seen many over the years) prompted me to return the Ryzen variant and order an Intel equivalent that costs a bit more but was worth it. This one is a keeper currently in its fourth month of use and there have been no issues whatsoever.

laptop good for middle school aged child

Like the hardware/specs for the price point. Middle school age child likes it--appears to stream/play java Minecraft better then on her laptop. Also has all the functionality for school needs. I would say heavier then most normal light use laptops.
