Is the music in the AMC show Breaking Bad used effectively throughout the show? To answer this question, I aim to explore the different uses of music found across the television show Breaking Bad, and show how the music is effectively used in the context of the settings and scenes of the world.
In this study, there are three chapters, with each chapter focusing on a specific episode of the show. These episodes are: Season 1, Episode 1 (entitled 'Pilot'); Season 2, Episode 7 (entitled 'Negro y Azul); and Season 5, Episode 14 ('Ozymandias'). These episodes have been specifically chosen for this study, due to their varying and effective uses of music, which range from different styles of Mariachi and Mexican style music, and original music composed by Dave Porter. This is also in addition to the pre-existing music that has been used in scenes. By examining the mixture of pre-existing and original music found throughout the show, I feel that I have successfully been able to link the music choices found in the programme, to real life events.
Additionally, through these episodes, this study explores how and why music has been chosen for specific moments in the programme's scenes. This is to show their relation to the on-screen story being presented, and to show how the music has been chosen to affect the scenes. As a result, this study also explores the musical identity of Breaking Bad, and explores the setting, using music to represent the scenes being shown.
