He could always provide the necessary information in preparation for battle. His officers found him indispensable, but he refused to accept a commission. He remained a sergeant, though he sat in with high ranking soldiers to plan many battles. He was a remarkable man and a perfect soldier, wounded three times and much decorated. Eventually he was decorated as "The best soldier in the battalion," and was introduced to many famous military and political figures. His diary is a real piece of literature. His insights are impressive.
