How to test a 7-way trailer plug with multimeter?

To check the pins on the vehicle side 7-Way, you can use a circuit tester or the volt meter.

The circuit tester will show you if a signal is coming through on the pin you are testing while the volt meter will tell you that and how much voltage is being sent.

When you test the brake circuit pin on the 7-Way, it may be more beneficial to see how much voltage it is sending through.

A bad ground connection is one of the most common causes for trailer wiring problems. A bad ground can show up as an overall lighting failure, even when the voltmeter says you have a charge. It can also create intermittent failure, causing your lights to flicker randomly. When mounting a ground wire, choose an existing factory ground connection where other ground wires are connected or use a bolt to mount the wire directly to your vehicle's chassis.

Note: Going with larger gauge wire (10 is usually the largest you will see for trailer wiring harnesses and connectors) can lead to a level of resistance that will cause some functions not to work properly.
