In the event of a ground fault or an unintended electrical path to ground such as a shot circuit or through a person, a GFCI will trip within a fraction of a second and stop the flow of electricity to prevent serious injury.

How to properly replace your GFCI.
If one has a modicum on how to rewire an electrical plugin in ones home, simply replace the pre-existing broken GFCI with your new one. Please note, the black wire is the hot wire (electrically charged), BUT this should NOT be during installation, because one ALWAYS turns off this plug-in power at one's fusebox...And since this current broken GFCI now has red-lights on (meaning it's broken), when one finds the correct switch in one's fuse box, then these red lights will turn off. Lastly, the black wire must connect to the gold or brass screw connect on the GFCI. White wire connects to its silver colored screw. Easy-peasy!
