In Fall 2018, as members of the Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative sat in the rocking chairs that edge Highlander Center's circular gathering space discussing this volume's theme, we could scarcely imagine the many new edges we are now facing in our region, our country and our world. A global pandemic, and its resulting changes to our educational system, our family and community relations, and just about everything else. A racial reckoning that is centuries overdue. We are grateful to our contributors for their willingness to address so many of the edges we encounter as we encounter Appalachia--personal, political, artistic, ecological--both new and old.
