The obverse of each Morgan Silver Dollar features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a Liberty Cap, designed by George T. Morgan. The word “LIBERTY” is inscribed on the ribbon of the cap, which is decorated with two heads of wheat and two cotton blossoms. Encircling the main device are 13 stars representing the original colonies, “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and the year of mintage.

The reverse of these coins showcases George T. Morgan’s design of a majestic bald eagle with outstretched wings, clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons, symbolizing peace and preparedness. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” complete the reverse design.

Morgan Dollars were first minted in 1878 after the passing of the Bland-Allison Act. They were minted till 1904 and then stopped but picked up again in 1921. Millions of these coins were minted and also melted due to the Pittman Act. Since these coins were minted more than needed for circulation, most of these coins were stored in the Treasury vaults, which the Treasury started issuing in exchange for silver certificates till the early 1960's.
