I'm an intermediate level water colorist and in the past have always had to size my paintings according to standard frame sizes for economy sake. Now I can just paint whatever I want and cut the mat to fit or just mat a portion of the painting. It has actually helped with the creative process. You can still cut the outside of the mat to fit standard frames while cutting the inside to fit your painting. Read the directions! Following the recommendations for testing the squareness of the cutter and correct if necessary. Test out some old cheap mats you have by cutting the opening out larger. A littler larger and you can reuse them as the top for double matting. Adjust the depth of the blades if you need to for perfect stops. You'll quickly get the hang of it. The mat cutter works very well and makes very clean cuts. The replacement blades are inexpensive so keep them sharp. This is a great investment considering the alternative of professional matting and framing.
