A little goes a long way. Just follow the directions. I have used it on trails in Florida and Vermont. On my last hike, I was swarmed by flies, bees, and mosquitos. The noise was loud for hours. However, I was not bitten or stung. It does have an odor, but after an hour, I didn't notice anymore. Your experience may be different. Many hikers treat their clothing with permethrin and use deet only on their skin since some expensive "miracle" camping fabrics might be degraded by deet. I rinse my hands with water after I apply the deet. If bugs cluster on my hands later, I just rub the backs of my hands on my treated skin. That's usually enough.
