    Just hours after John F. Kennedy was assassinated, serious consideration was being given to honoring JFK by placing his image on one of the larger coins: the Silver dollar, half dollar or quarter. In the end, Jacqueline Kennedy preferred that her husband’s image be placed on the half dollar because she did not want George Washington removed from the quarter. On December 30, 1970, President Nixon authorized the removal of Silver from the half dollar. Starting in 1971, the half dollars were made of a pure copper inner layer between two outer layers of cupronickel (a copper/nickel alloy).
