Solid material, the rails are thick and the lumber rack supports are also made from sturdy square hollow steel as well. I mounted my rails on 2x4's mounted on 2x6's and then lagged the 2x6's into the wall studs. I loaded up the racks with all my lumber and it is holding fine. I worry about the walls giving out before the rack system will. Even though the rack shelves are tilted up a bit, I also tied rope from the top to the bottom just in case something shifted. I wish I would have purchased these a couple of years ago. The only thing I would change is that the rack supports are not adjustable, they are pre-drilled at regular intervals.

First off the construction. All of the framing and arms that hold the materials are very sturdy. Assembly is not hard but getting at the nuts/bolts that attach the arms can be a little tricky esp. If you have large hands. I would recommend assembly on a bench or table. Mounting it on the wall was easy. The kit only comes with lags for wood so if you are mounting on a block wall you will need to get your own hardware. The mounting holes are a decent size so it is easy to line everything up even when drilling into block. We are actually using this to store PVC pipe and this unit is almost overbuilt for that purpose. You can fit a lot of pipe on it. Well over 300 feet. My only regret is not buying one for my shop sooner!
