I love this thing!

There's a note on the Roomba when you first take it out of the box that gives permission for technical people to change the software if they want to program the Roomba for other things. I thought that was interesting and may be good information for those looking for a base to a robot war competition. It came with the charging base, an extra filter and a cleaning tool for the brushes. To get the little robot to working, you just tap the “clean” button on the top twice and off he goes! This Roomba has buttons on the top of it to easily program start times for the Roomba to clean on it's own, but I haven't used that feature. I feel I need to be present when the Roomba is working because for my house the Roomba gets in a situation sometimes that needs my intervention. It can get stuck in or under furniture etc. When that happens a female voice says something like, ”An error has occurred, please pick up Roomba and place somewhere else”. I actually enjoy watching it work. It's memorizing and the technology is fascinating. It's very gentle on furniture and just gives a little soft bump, then it realizes it needs to go in a different direction. At first it chewed on a house plant that has leafs at the floor level, so now I know to block off that and other areas, like the dog dish, and some areas it might get stuck. It only takes a pillow or a rolled up towel to block off an area. There are also electronic wall devices you can buy separately that block the Roomba from areas, but for me the pillows and towels work fine. I was amazed at how much dust and dirt it collected in it's tray. The little guy (I call the Roomba Rodney, Rodney the Roomba) goes right under the furniture to clean and under the bed as well. These are places that are hard to get to with a regular vacuum. Also, it cleans very well! It leaves the carpet with that clean brushed look. It has dirt sensors, so it will take a rabbit trail and spin in a certain area if it senses a dirtier area. You can see the brush tracks as the Roomba moves in cross sections as well as back and fourth. It also transitions easily to hard flooring to carpet and vise versa. It has a charging base that it will come back to when it's battery is getting low. If it's in a different room, sometimes it has a hard time making it's way back to the base though and will just run out of energy. It has a handle that you can pick it up and put it back to it's base manually too. If it's in the same room, it will find it's base fine. My son borrowed it to take work to clean his office. Now he's wanting to borrow my Rodney all the time. Rodney makes vacuuming easy and fun! It came with an extra filter and a cleaning tool for the brushes.

Roomba 680 is a hard worker!

The iRobot Roomba 680 Robot Vacuum is a hard worker on both hard floors and carpet. Roomba excels at carpets! His low profile and excellent pre-programmed pattern of cleaning allowed him to easily scoot under beds and thoroughly clean entire carpeted bedrooms! He did not get “stuck” in the bedrooms; of course, I picked up potential trouble makers like waste paper baskets etc. I did not notice any “straining” at all when Roomba cleaned the carpets, as I noticed another robot cleaner I have does. Roomba also cleans hard floors but I noticed it has no special setting and it does not claim to sense the difference and accommodate the changed heights. This model also has a “spot” cleaning mode which is very helpful. When pressed, it spirals outwards in a 3 feet circle and then it spirals inwards to where it started. I liked this feature on my area rugs that receive a lot of traffic. Roomba can also be programmed for automatic cleaning once a day up to 7 days per week. One can purchase a virtual wall barrier to help contain Roomba or, as I did, one can use a box, sofa cushions etc to “fence him in.” One really must do that; otherwise Roomba goes too far afield, exploring distant lands, I mean, rooms! Lol! (Of course, doors are ideal). Roomba has a pretty good cliff sensor, and his sensors prevent the annoying bumping of other “bump and go” type robot vacuums. He is not unduly loud. Lastly, the dust bin and filter are easily accessed and cleaned. The one area Roomba has trouble with is corners, of course. He is round and corners are square. So I just took a damp paper towel at the end and wiped up the corners on tile or used a brush on carpet. I especially loved how I could put him I the guest room by himself while I did other things, and voila! The carpet was freshly groomed for my guests!

I'm a Roomba convert!

I am impressed with the iRobot Roomba 680. I will admit I was a little skeptical at first about whether or not this vacuum would perform as well as my other canister vacuum does. Well quite frankly it is a close call. I have a Pomeranian, she is kept groomed but because her breed has what is called a double coat of fur. It seems like no matter how often I vacuum, I will find fur along the baseboards of my house. The Roomba cleans very well in that it has a side brush that extends out and gets the dust, and fur that can accumulate along the baseboards. It also has 2 other brushes on the bottom which do a very good job of picking up what ever it finds. Because of it's low profile height of only 3" the Roomba easily gets under most of my furniture and does a very good job of cleaning all the floor surfaces in my house. I have tile, vinyl, wood and low profile carpet. You can see by my photo that it even grooms the carpet. The first time I used this I was shocked at the amount of dog hair it got. The one feature that I really like about the Roomba is the ability to set a weeks worth of vacuuming with the built in calendar feature. The Roomba will clean for about an hour once a day everyday of the week. I have had this vacuum for 2 weeks now and use it everyday. After the first week I got out my canister vacuum to see how much dirt if any was left behind by the Roomba. I have to say my canister vacuum got a little more of the deep down dirt out of my carpets but, not a big difference though. Using the Roomba daily keeps my floors clean. Love it!
