Jane Austen's early works, written between 1787, when she was just eleven, and 1793, when she was seventeen, were long suppressed by fears that the singularity and sharp irony of these youthful writings might damage the author's image. However, after their initial publication in the early 20th century, Virginia Woolf expressed her surprise and admiration for them. Most are short stories, but Austen also wrote the beginning of what could have become a full-fledged novel, "Catharine, or the Bower," as well as dramatic sketches, poems, and a few essays.
