PERFECT

After several runs, I can confidently say I love this shoe. They fixed every issue I had with the Superior 3.5. I don't find myself needing to pay much attention to shoe width across a multitude of styles and brands, so I assume I'm about average. I think altra nailed the toe box, it gives enough room but isn't overly cumbersome like I felt the 3.5 was. I can't compare it to the 4 since I've never worn that shoe, but the 4.5 is a massive improvement over the 3.5, and I can't think of a thing I would change. I am normally a 10.5 or 11, my Superior 3.5s were a 10.5, but these feel right at an 11. I am seriously considering buying a few more pairs because this shoe is perfect imo.

Most runners don't want boats on their feet

This shoe is excellent. NOT a far cry from previous versions and certainly not to the point that some reviewers are claiming. It may have become slightly narrower in the forefoot, but only SLIGHTLY. You will likely need to size a half up. Otherwise an excellent, fast, light, well-fitted shoe for most foot types.

Mostly Better Than the 4.0

I'm a trail runner. I think the minor changes that were made over the Superior 4.0 were mostly for the better. The biggest change is the narrowing of the toe box. I think it was a needed change because the toe box of the 4.0 was too loose and caused some slapping when descending. The new narrow shape fixes that problem completely, as well as giving a degree of added confidence on uneven terrain (no more random ankle rolls). However, in my opinion Altra made it slightly too narrow. I say this because I got a blister on my big toe during my first run in the 4.5. I never got a blister with the 4.0 and I've run a couple hundred miles in them. Everyone has different feet and so opinions will vary but in my opinion the slightly too narrow toe box is a price worth paying for the added benefits of the 4.5. If you have very wide feet then I would recommend buying the 4.0. Other changes are the removal of the weird eyelet chain, replaying it with a normal setup. I liked both, but the new version is a little easier to lace up. The upper feels different too, but I can't say I noticed a big difference in ventilation, which was a minor complaint with the 4.0. I'd like to have more ventilation but it only becomes a problem on really hot days. Overall I really like this shoe and will be buying another pair (hopefully the 5.0) once they wear out.

Hi there, thanks so much for your feedback! This is helpful for us in understanding how customers are experiencing fit and feel between iterations of a model. The sizing was a bit off in the 4.0 so we have tried to adjust that in the 4.5. It's possible that the tight fit is due to this change specifically. The last used for the 4.0 and 4.5 is our performance last so it's definitely going to fit a bit more snug than other models. It's built to perform! Thanks again for sharing your experience :)
