[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My first thought upon seeing the SurgeArrest PH12U2 was that it would be great under my desk, replacing my 2 power strips. But then my daughter took it with her, when she headed off to her last semester at college. It's perfect in the typical dorm room.
In my case at my desk I need to power a home desktop, a work laptop, desk lamp, multiple monitors, a printer, speakers, etc. This unit can handle them all. Plus, it has a couple of USB ports for charging my phone charged and my portable USB power pack. I feel good know that all my stuff is protected from power surges.
The 12 outlets are oriented 7 in-line and 5 perpendicular. Two of the 5 perpendicular are spaced for large power adapters. In total, I was able to plug in 3 large power adapters, plus 2 medium-sized power adapters without blocking other outlets.
The 2 USB ports are rated to charge at a full 2.4 amps. I tested them, and indeed they charged both a phone and a power-hungry tablet at their full rate. (I've had problems with other USB charges being able to supply full power to the tablet.)
The wall plug is flat, so that it won't block furniture being pushed up against the wall. Plus, the cord comes out from the plug at an angle, so that it doesn't block the other wall outlet. Since I had wall-mounted my old power strips, I appreciated that there are openings on the back of the unit itself that allow wall mounting either horizontally or vertically.
There is a power switch, which controls power to all the outlets. A light indicates, when the switch is on. A second light indicates that the ground connection of the wall outlet is wired properly. (A proper ground is required for the surge protection to work. There was one time I actually found incorrect building wiring with such a light.)
