Yellow Turmeric Root Plant - Curcuma longa - 4" Pot

Curcuma longa is a member of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). Its rhizomes (underground stems) are the source of a bright yellow spice and dye. Immediate shipping, 4" Pot Turmeric is sterile (does not produce seed, but it does grow vigorously from the rhizomes). It is thought to have arisen by selection and vegetative propagation of a hybrid between wild turmeric (Curcuma aromatica), native to India, Sri Lanka and the eastern Himalayas, and some other closely related species. Curcuma longa is a perennial plant with roots or tubers deep orange inside. Leaves about 2 feet long, smooth, of a uniform green. Flowers are dull yellow. It is propagated by cuttings from the root. In fresh state, the roots have an aromatic and spicy fragrance, which by drying gives way to a more medicinal aroma.
