Prepare a Phillips screwdriver and a pair of work gloves before installation. Remove screw pull old element out install new one put screw back in. You can usually identify a burnt-out element by blistering or small holes on the element's coils. The new SP21YA surface element 8" has a protective coating on it to protect the surface. On first use, the protective coating will evaporate with the high temperature and there may be a little smoke, this is normal as this is caused by the protective coating of the new burner element. Don't worry, just keep using it.
