Native to the northern hemisphere in Asia, Europe, and North America, this herbaceous perennial spreads readily via self-seeding and rhizomes and is found in meadows across West Virginia. Yarrow's deep root system makes it drought tolerant and perfect for dry, sunny sites, where its flat-topped clusters of white flowers attract butterflies, beetles, and hoverflies in midsummer. Its somewhat untidy growth habit makes it more suited to the naturalized landscape than a structured planting, but it may be cut back after its initial flowering to maintain its shape.
