In 1937, an ocean could be crossed in comfort high above the waves. The Hindenburg was a towering airship, about 803 feet long (roughly 245 meters), thirteen stories tall, and capable of cruising near 80 mph (about 125 km/h). Inside, designer Fritz August Breuhaus created a world where every gram mattered. Passengers dined beside wide windows, relaxed in bright lounges, wrote letters in a quiet salon, and visited a sealed smoking room where only electric lighters were allowed. Early voyages even featured an aluminum baby grand piano. Over 200,000 miles of service and thousands of passengers built a reputation for smooth, punctual travel.
On May 6, 1937, as the ship approached Lakehurst, routine met its limit. Delays from headwinds, a charged evening after passing storms, a stubborn tail-heavy trim, rope lines dropped to a wet field, and then a first flicker aft. In about 34 seconds the great hull collapsed, flames racing forward while the ground crew scattered and a stunned radio voice tried to keep up with events.
