Dialysis tubing, also known as Visking tubing, provides useful class aid for demonstrating the principles of diffusion, osmosis, Brownian motion, and the movement of molecules across a restrictive membrane. Diameter of tubing (of approximately 1 inch, or 25-2/5 millimeters) reflects size when flat. This dialysis tubing has a typical molecular weight cutoff of 12,000 to 14,000 Daltons. Roll of dialysis tubing has 100 L feet x 1 W inches (when flat).
Dialysis tubing is used in separation techniques that facilitates the removal or exchange of small molecules from macromolecules in solution based on differential diffusion.
