An international bestseller published in over thirty countries, this riveting sci-fi dystopic thriller is “a bona fide page-turner.” --MTV.com
Callie lost her parents when the Spore Wars wiped out everyone between the ages of twenty and sixty. She and her little brother, Tyler, go on the run, living as squatters with their friend Michael and fighting off renegades who would kill them for a cookie.
Callie’s only hope is Prime Destinations, a disturbing place in Beverly Hills run by a mysterious figure known as the Old Man. He hires teens to rent their bodies to Enders—seniors who want to be young again. Callie, desperate for the money that will keep her, Tyler, and Michael alive, agrees to be a donor. But the neurochip they place in Callie’s head malfunctions and she wakes up in the life of her renter.
Callie soon discovers that her renter intends to do more than party—and that Prime Destinations’ plans are more evil than she could ever have imagined. . . .

“Starters” is not just your daughter's (or in my case) granddaughter's novel. Lissa wrote an exciting page turner that was not “dumbed down” to attract younger readers. I was fascinated by the cover and was curious to learn this cover girl's story. It's an intriguing concept…young people called Starters left to fend for themselves due to the Spore Wars that wiped out everyone between the ages of 20 and 60. Callie, the main character, is orphaned and left to not only fend for herself but to also care for her younger, sickly brother. She's scared, desperate and makes a decision that ultimately takes her to a frightening place. Prime Destinations hires teens to rent their bodies to Enders – seniors who want to be young again. Romance, intrigue, murder…who could ask for anything more? Well, I can. I'm anxiously awaiting Lissa's follow up novel, Enders. Highly recommend!!!
Page-turning science fiction, timely commentary
Like most great science fiction novels, "Starters" transcends its genre by addressing some of the modern issues most relevant to its readership. That's not the say the book is preachy, stuffy or heavy-handed -- it is none of these things. In fact, it's a fast-paced, gripping story about a bold, clever heroine and her struggle to protect her family in a post-apocalyptic world. But Price also manages to use her story to discuss the modern teenager's desperation for superficial beauty and the dangers that this cultural obsession can pose. This commentary steers the book out of the realm of sci-fi fluff and into the realm of young adult literature -- both suspenseful and meaningful, accessible to younger readers and engaging for older ones.
An Amazing Debut; Highly Recommended!
The Spore Wars have left the United States ravaged. Citizens of middle age are all but destroyed. Starters and Enders live in a world of extremes, where the very old tread on the very young...unless they want to rent them. From beginning to end, Lissa Price has built a world that is dark, fascinating, and compelling. Her characters scream from the spine, enticing the reader through a flurry of twists, turns, and pages before leaving him or her breathless and ready for more. Fans of dystopian will fall in love with Starters, and will fall into a fantasy in which they can't help but wonder — could this happen in our world?
