The emotional damage my heart went through with this book is so not fair!
I went into this book remembering Tiernan from LJ'S previous book, Handsome Devil, (also phenomenal book) as pretty much a heartless man with zero moral compass. LJ then proceeds to yank my emotions straight out, mix them up and then lovingly put me back together at the same time.
This storyline follows Tiernan and Lila, whom both appear in the previous interconnected book (definitely recommend reading, but you don't necessarily have to).
Tiernan is ruthless and a pretty emotionless mafia leader for the Irish, and he doesn't do relationships or get attached to anyone for any reason. Lila is a rival (ish) family's daughter, who has most of her life been tucked away due to what appears to be due to some disabilities. Tragic and heartbreaking events transpire that make Lila's family desperate to protect her at any cost. That cost they decide is none other than Tiernan Callaghan, whom they feel is the exact man who needs to take on this responsibility. You meet a few supporting characters in this book whom you will love and a few you will wanna throttle.
Tiernan and Lila's story from this point takes you on a wild and emotional ride.
I definitely don't want to spoil this for you, so I'll keep details limited. I was not prepared for the ups and downs that my heart went through reading the dark mafia romance. I cried, had major heartbreak, laughed and wanted to rage so many times for these characters. This book has a great plot, pacing and real depth, while also touching on some really difficult topics. Please... Please check your TWs on this one before you begin reading.
When you move past the traumatic events, the story does give you some peace and healing. I will forever remember this book and would most likely love to give it more than 5 stars.
I didn't think I could love someone more than Tate from Handsome Devil, but Tiernan??? He stole my heart and ran away with it, while Lila was one of my favorite FMCs. Her character development was awe inspiring and my heart broke so many times for her. She's a true legend in my opinion.
Thank you, LJ Shen and The Author Agency for allowing me to ARC read again.
