I bought this device so that I could repair Surface Mount electronic circuit boards. Some integrated circuits have 100 pins that need to be soldered to the circuit board also when these ICs are removed the solder on the pads need to be removed before a new IC can be soldered in. This scope gives me a better view than a magnifying glass and the focal length is better. Focal length is important because you need to see what you are doing as well as getting soldering iron and other tools into the area that is being magnified. At full magnification the scope is on top of the magnified area and it can only be used for inspection but I rarely need to be that close. There are a few problems. The program for the scope needs to be loaded onto the Administrator section of your computer. The program also freezes a takes pictures when you don't want to take picture. I need real time info not pictures. My computer recognizes the scope as a USB Video device and I use that instead of the program that came with the scope. The scope has a light but it is too bright it needs to have a light dimmer and most of the time I use the ambient light at my desk. The base needs to be a heavier because when the goose neck is pulled over the inspection area it tends to lift up. I put a stapler on the base to hold it down. Overall this scope meets my needs, at 1/10th the cost of a real inspection microscope.
