Peanuts® and "A Charlie Brown Christmas"
On December 9th, 1965 the first Peanuts animated special, "A Charlie Brown Christmas" made its debut on national television. Based on cartoonist Charles M. Schulz's popular comic strip, this unique holiday special was written by Schulz, directed by Bill Melendez, and produced by Lee Mendelson all on a modest budget and in six short months. The special was something of an anomaly as it eschewed bright holiday cheer for melancholy and followed a depressed Charlie Brown desperate to understand the true meaning of Christmas. With a little help from his friends and his faithful dog Snoopy, Charlie Brown eventually learns what the holiday spirit is all about.
"A Charlie Brown Christmas" was an unexpected success: it earned rave reviews, earned both Emmy and Peabody awards, and its jazz soundtrack continues to sell millions of copies. It paved the way for many more successful Peanuts animated specials and cemented its place as a true holiday classic.
