Riedhoff 14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner, 750 Sq.ft Coverage, with Remote Control, White

Electricity has gotten so expensive where we live that we have started using the whole house A/C sparingly during the summer, and only on the hottest days. Since we spend the bulk of our time in the living and kitchen area, I'm hoping this portable A/C unit will allow us to keep our costs down by only cooling the space we're in. The unit is a good size and has wheels so it can be moved easily. It comes with all of the pieces you need to install it near your window of choice. The piece that allows you to put the A/C's exhaust hose in the window measures about 25 5/8 inches and slides to extend to nearly double that length, so if you have a smaller or larger window, you may have to rig it to get it to stay in place. The cord on A/C unit is fairly short - around 6 feet, which limits where you can put it. For safety reasons, it must be plugged directly into a grounded wall outlet. I plan to use it as a dehumidifier in the fall/winter, as our house tends to get cold and damp. A drainage tube is included in the package and the only other thing you need to use the dehumidifier feature is a bucket to run the tube into. There is a drain pan in the unit, but it's not all that big and once it fills up, the unit will turn itself off, until you've emptied it. I don't want to have to mess with that, so I'm going the bucket route. I won't need to vent it out the window to use it as a dehumidifier and as a bonus, it should blow warm air out the back, as it works, which will help heat the room. Even though it's chilly here, I plugged the A/C unit in and fired it up to see how quickly it would cool things off. It started blowing cold air right away. The controls are easy to use. It has three modes: Cool, Dry and Fan and three speeds. The noise level isn't too bad. I do think that the plastic vents on the back are a bit flimsy though. I pulled one off to take a look at the coils and it bent easily and gave me a bit of trouble when I went to snap it back into place. I do wish that part was a bit sturdier. I'm looking forward to using this portable A/C unit throughout the year and am hopeful that it will save us money in the long run and result in a drier home in those chilly, rainy months.
