Perfect after a little fix!

I followed the instructions and applied vacuum. It went down to minus 25 inHg and no further. I turned off the vacuum and the pressure immediately started rising. I took everything apart for inspection. I found a small funnel like bevel inside the hole through the glass. Obviously this was intended for something other than a hard plastic washer. I replaced the upper metal washer with a small rubber o-ring. Then inserted the stem in the hole in the glass, followed by the plastic washer, a metal washer, and the nut. This left one metal washer unused. Tightening the nut forced the surface of the valve assembly to compress against the rubber o-ring, and the bevel forced the rubber o-ring to compress against the stem itself. Hence two sealing surfaces! Careful not to overtighten! This time the vacuum went to -30 inHg and stayed there for 3 days until I released it. Note: the first 2 times the gauge would not return to zero. Followed the instructions for this and problem went away.

Vacuum chamber sealed easily and perfectly. I especially like the fact that it uses off the shelf parts on the gauge valve assembly allowing me to replace the valve on the pump side with a check valve and have the assembly remote rather than on the chamber cover. This eliminated concerns of pump oil traveling to the chamber when pump (on an on/off timer and unattended) was off but still under vacuum. This might serve as an option suggestion to the manufacturer.
