Red Sprite Winterberrry - Ilex verticillata 'Red Sprite'

Ilex Red Sprite (Winterberry )is a hardy, dwarf deciduous shrub valued for its compact, rounded upright habit and glossy green foliage, which provides attractive structure throughout the growing season despite lacking fall color. In summer, Ilex Red Sprite produces small, dull white flowers that, when properly pollinated by a nearby male holly, develop into profuse clusters of bright red berries in fall, persisting into winter and creating vibrant seasonal interest. Ideal for borders, foundation plantings, and wildlife-friendly gardens, Ilex Red Sprite thrives in moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils and adapts well to sun or partial shade. MAINTENANCE NEEDS:  Low Maintenance.  Water regularly.   Well-drained soils essential.   Potential issues include mites, scale, leaf spot, rot, and mildew.  Susceptible to leaf scorch or drop if not protected from afternoon sun in hotter climates.  Prune in early spring before flowering.
