Street Songs of Love, Alejandro Escovedo's follow-up to 2008's universally acclaimed Real Animal, marks a return of sorts and simultaneously begins an entirely new chapter in his long artistic career. Escovedo re-teamed with producer Tony Visconti, who helmed Real Animal's sessions. But there is also a first here. While Escovedo's live shows have been full of rock & roll moments, his albums are best-known for his poetic ballads with a few rockers carefully layered in. Street Songs of Love changes that up: this is a recording of straight-up, tough rockers with a crack band and backing chorus that weaves a few ballads into the mix. It's a startling new twist that should excite longtime fans and make the uninitiated sit up and take notice.
